Preserve Your Teeth as You Age

Just as anything else that gets used for an extended period of time, your teeth are susceptible to wear and tear as you age.

1.) Practice Healthy Brushing Habits

The first, and most obvious way to keep your teeth healthy as you age is by practicing healthy brushing habits. By keeping a healthy routine with brushing, you diminish the risks of damaging your teeth - as well as lowering your risk for gum disease. While a typical, standard tooth brush will work fine (as long as you use it correctly!), some doctors have suggested using electric brushes. Electric brushes will help you to ensure that you are brushing for the correct amount of time, as well as getting into those hard to reach places.

2.) Quit Smoking

Another obvious, but effective tip is to quit smoking. It is no contest that smoking has extremely detrimental effects on oral hygiene - and your health, of course. Quitting smoking will reduce your risk of gum disease, as well as reduce the likelihood of tooth loss.

3.) Wear a Night Guard

Grinding your teeth is an issue that some face - especially in their sleep. To help combat this, you could obtain a night guard. What a night guard is, essentially, is a retainer. The night guard will protect your teeth from grinding and, ultimately, wearing them down. If your teeth get worn down, their effectiveness will be reduced.

Following these simple tips will help to ensure that your teeth will remain healthy as you age. Of course, another great tip would be to check in with your dentist regularly. See if you qualify to become a patient at HealthLink Dental Clinic!
