March is National Nutrition Month!

We all know how important nutrition is to our health, but many people forget just how important it is for our teeth and oral health as well!

No this is not the avoid sugary foods lecture (although that is important too). We are talking about the power that fruits and vegetables have on our TEETH!

  1. Crunchy Vegetables. Crunchy vegetables found in a veggie tray like carrots, broccoli, and bell peppers have ruffage that will remove plaque, a bacterial substance that sticks to your teeth.

  2. Leafy Greens. Time to work some spinach and romaine into your lunch rotation! These greens contain folate which will strengthen enamel, guard against gum disease, and reduce gum inflammation.

  3. Shiitake Mushrooms. These mushrooms contain a polysaccharide called lentinan, which regulates the immune system and breaks down bacteria in your mouth for healthier gums and teeth.

  4. Strawberries. This one is always a shocker, but strawberries, despite their vibrant red color, can actually whiten your teeth! There is an acid called malik in them that has special whitening properties!

  5. Apples. Apples share the same superpowers as strawberries!

As Dr. Braun (volunteer dentist here at HealthLink) told us in his recent interview - just limit foods that stick to the teeth! Think pasta, bread, pretzels, etc. In moderation these foods are fine, but let's start making a conscious effort to add the powerful vegetables and fruits listed above into our diets this month and every month forward!
