The Connection Between Skin Disease and Gum Disease

Monday, July 8 is World Skin Day, and this is the first year HealthLink has secured free CeraVe samples and skin health education for our free dental clinic!

Why? Because while of course we understand how important it is for everyone to be educated on skin health and have equal access to dermatology services, there is also research emerging on the connection between some skin diseases and periodontitis (gum disease).

According to the National Library of Medicine, studies have identified connections between oral hygiene, the presence of specific bacterial species, and a variety of autoimmune skin conditions suggesting that oral care and its subsequent effect on the oral microbiome could be a risk factor for skin disease.

Also, according to the article found on The National Library of Medicine, the strongest correlation found between oral health and skin disease is between psoriasis and periodontitis (gum disease). Another study suggested that individuals with psoriasis are more likely to have gum disease than those without psoriasis.

Understanding this relationship is important because if you don't know you have psoriasis then you also may not know that you could have gum disease or have an increased chance of developing gum disease. Some people diagnosed with psoriasis have been diagnosed with severe cases of gum disease, and so severe periodontitis may be a risk indicator for psoriasis.

HealthLink is dedicated to staying on top of new research linking oral health and other diseases and health conditions and also committed to providing our patients and readers with information and resources for overall better health and quality of life.

We invite you to come by our clinic on Monday, July 8 for free CeraVe skin samples and for patient eligibility checks for those interested in becoming a patient at our free dental clinic.

HealthLink Dental Clinic is located at 444 N. York Road, Suite B3, Hatboro, PA 19040.

We hope to see you there!

It really shows how everything in the body is linked. I learned this lesson myself with sleep apnea. For years I had no idea my exhaustion and brain fog were coming from my breathing stopping at night. I tried CPAP but could not tolerate it. Eventually I found a sleep apnea treatment without cpap that works for me. Treating the root cause improved my energy, my mood, and even my skin. It is amazing how one untreated condition can affect so many areas of health.

This article does a great job explaining the link between skin and gum health, especially how conditions like psoriasis may connect to oral hygiene. After reading useful health insights like this, I like to unwind with Slope Rider which is a fun reflex-based game where you ride down slopes and stay balanced.
